To use WiFi you need to have:

This means built-in Wireless LAN capability (such as Intel Centrino) or an added WiFi card (PCMCIA card for a laptop or Compact Flash card for a PDA). The Building Zones network supports any computer and card that conform to the WiFi standards including Windows, Macintosh, Linux and other operating systems, although we recommend a Windows XP operating system or Apple’s Airport. 5. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

5.1 What exactly is WiFi? Wi-Fi is the commercial name given to the IEEE 802.11b/g communications standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (LANs). WiFi extends the current standard technology for networking computers, which is the Ethernet protocol, from today’s physical wires to wireless radio, to connect computing devices to a network.

5.2 Is WiFi secure? Customers are exposed to no more risk than other standard Internet access services. The services provided should not increase security threats to visitor’s equipment and information on their laptops and PDA’s. Customers will be reminded that Building Zones provides an Internet access service similar in concept to the thousands of other service providers world-wide and that personal firewall software or features should be enabled on their device. Windows XP and Mac OS has these options within the operating system but personal firewall software is also available separately for this and other operating systems.

5.3 Are there any health risks associated with the use of WiFi? There is no evidence to show that WiFi poses a health risk. WiFi works at much lower power levels and over shorter ranges than mobile networks.

5.4 What should I do if I can’t see the Wireless network? If you cannot see the wireless network on your list of available wireless networks you may have a problem with your wireless network adaptor. You can try to following steps to remedy this: Ensure that your wireless card is turned on. Some laptops have a switch to operate this. Move closer to the access point. You may be sitting in an area with poor WiFi reception or you are outside the coverage area. Try again, some wireless adaptors can take a minute or two to detect all available wireless networks.

5.5 What should I do if I can’t get to the landing page? There are a few reasons why this might happen. Our service gives you an IP address via a protocol called DHCP. Your notebook/PDA needs to be set-up to get its address and DNS server address this way. If you have a fixed IP address or you don’t get your DNS server from our system, you won’t be able to open our first page. The other reason might be that you use a proxy server to access the Internet. You won’t be able to access the proxy server through our system so you’ll need to turn off your proxy server.

5.6 Still having problems? Although the service is simple to use, there may be times you might need additional help and support. If you have a technical question about Wi-Fi, the CONNECT service, or the setup of your WLAN card, laptop, or PDA, please refer to the manufacturer’s information, or call our dedicated help line on 020 8614 0317. This is available 8am to 5pm each day Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. This helpline has been created specifically for users of the service.
